Are You Addicted?

image The London School of Economics and Political Science is conducting a survey as part of a research project to study the impact of push mail on productivity and balance between personal life and work. This is a short survey (about 5 minutes) and has some good questions that will help you determine very quickly if you are addicted to your BlackBerry or not (in case you don’t know already…).

Latest OS: 8800 4.5.0.72 / 4.5.0.52 (MultiLanguage)

The latest version of the BlackBerry OS 4.5 is available on the BlackBerry web site (for Orange Romania). This would be the 3rd version of OS 4.5 that I installed on my BlackBerry and I have to say that it was well worth it to upgrade from 4.2.x. The upgrade process doesn’t take too long (about an hour) but you should know what you are doing so you don’t destroy your BlackBerry (see instructions below). I’ve seen many fixes through the different builds that I upgraded and even new functionality that wasn’t available in previous builds. In my opinion, the best features of this OS are the email spell checker and HTML email. Although the HTML mail on my corporate account requires a BES upgrade (which my work still didn’t do), I’m enjoying HTML mails on my personal accounts through BIS.

Software For BlackBerry® 8800 smartphone

Package Version: 4.5.0.75
Consisting of:
Applications: 4.5.0.52
Software Platform: 2.7.0.66

Instructions for installing on ANY 8800 (regardless of carrier)

  1. Make sure you have Desktop Manager 4.5 installed. If not, get it here.
  2. Download the above file to the PC then install it to the PC by running (double clicking) the OS file you downloaded. Make sure that Desktop Manager is closed and that your BlackBerry IS NOT connected while installing on your PC – You will connect it later.
  3. Locate the vendor.xml file and delete it. It's located in c:\program files\common files\research in motion\apploader
  4. Plug in the BlackBerry and Open Desktop Manager. You should be prompted to upgrade.

The process takes about 45 minutes to an hour depending on how much data you have to backup and restore during the process. Once it's done loading the new OS it will reboot (it may do this twice during the entire process.) You will see a white screen with an hourglass for up to 20 minutes at a time while the Desktop Manager says "waiting for initialization."
If you end up with a white screen with small icons and the number 507, simply connect to Desktop Manager again and run application loader again and it should load the OS to the device.

Make sure you download the right version for your device. (you can find there this build for other BlackBerry devices also like 8700, 8820, 8320)

Upgrade on your own risk and don’t complain to me if it fails Shame on you

Don’t Take Your Laptop Out Of The Bag

The most annoying thing about going through a security checkpoint after taking off your shoes is taking out the laptop of your bag. It’s amazing how many laptops are broken or lost because of this.

Scooba Design has been working with the TSA to develop an “X-ray friendly” bag that will allow the TSA agents to see through the bag and make sure that the laptop is “kosher” without the need to take it out of the bag. The bags are “coming soon” and there is still no price information available, but you can read here the full information on the product.

I have a soft spot in my heart to things you can buy that are completely useless, like the stuff you’ll find in Sharper Image (R.I.P.), Brookstone etc. This little product caught my eye today and reminded me of the stories of rich people burning money or the stories of people lighting their cigar with a $100 bill.

The Money to Burn Fire Starters are fake rolls of $100’s that will help you impress your buddies and show them how to start a fire in style. You can use these in your fireplace, grill or campfire. Set of 6 money rolls go for $12.95 or cheaper when you order more. Enjoy the heat!

MetrO – Free Public Transit Directions

MetrO is a free BlackBerry application that lets you get public transportation information to over 400 cities offline. The application itself comes empty when you initially install it and then you can download information for any city you want. Although MetrO doesn’t include maps it has very detailed information about the route you should take and the most important thing is that the information is stored on your BlackBerry, so you can search even when you have no network coverage (like when you are in the subway and need to use it…)

You can read on their web site a detailed walk through on how to use the application.

Free (up to) 5MB from your BlackBerry!

You can run out of internal memory in your BlackBerry really quick if you install different applications and themes. The main problem if you are running out of memory is that the BlackBerry will be very slow! The guys over at BerryCoder released a free application that is called MaxMem. This application can easily help you free some memory on your BlackBerry. The application is very simple and has different buttons that will delete from your BlackBerry some of the unused BlackBerry applications that RIM doesn’t provide an interface to remove.

    image

Before running the application make sure to backup your BlackBerry in case you remove something you shouldn’t have!!

If you are a BES user (you have a BlackBerry through your work…) DON’T REMOVE MDS!!

    REVIEW: Sony DSC-W170

image About four and a half years ago I bought a Sony DSC-T1. The T1 was a revolutionary sub compact camera. It took 5 megapixel pictures using a 3x optical zoom Carl Zeiss lens with a 2.5” LCD monitor. All this came a in tiny 3.6 x 2.4 camera. Only 0.8 in thick and 180 grams. This was a great camera that could fit into your pocket without even feeling it. The best thing about the T1 was the speed – Sony gave a new meaning to point-and-shoot, since the camera was ready for operation as soon as you open it and there was no delay at all like in other small cameras back than. After the T1 was released all the other manufactures followed and you could get this size of LCD in all cameras and the same body type. I’ve seen the cameras getting better throughout the years, with better resolution and features but had no reason to replace my T1 since it was great and provided everything I needed – until last month when it died Crying. I’m not sure what happened to it but everything is blurry so it seems as if I damaged the lens or something like that. In any case, it’s not worth trying to even fix it with the prices of cameras today so I decided to go shopping for a new one Big Grin.

I started reading reviews on the Internet to see what I should buy. I wanted to still get a small camera like I had so I can carry it anywhere without the need to carry another bag and get as many features as I can. This type of camera exists now from all vendors so the decision was even harder. On one hand, I have a lot of good experience with Sony products, and on the other hand it is annoying that they have their own memory card formats and don’t use the same cards as the rest of the industry so I seriously looked at other cameras in the same category from Canon and Nikon. After a lot of reading, comparison and customer reviews I decided to stay with Sony and get the Sony DSC-W170.

image I decided to move from the T series (ultra-slim point-and-shoot) to the W series (compact point-and-shoot) for one main reason: Optical Zoom 5x! Although it is a little thicker (0.9 inch versus the 0.8 inch my T1 was) the optical zoom is the most important feature that the small cameras are lacking when compared to the bigger once (in my opinion…). The main specifications of the W170: 10.1 MP, 2.7" LCD display, Carl Zeiss wide 5x (28mm) Optical Zoom lens, Smile Shutter technology, Face Detection, Intelligent Scene Recognition, optical image stabilization. Camera dimensions: 3.7 x 2.3 x 0.9 inch and weighs only 173 grams including the battery. The maximum shutter speed is an impressive 1/1600 sec which is also very important and typically the main difference between a good and a bad compact point-and-shoot.

I’ve been using the camera for the last couple of weeks and I must say I love it! It is very easy to use (the dial buttons are so much better than touch screen navigation!), the new features for face detection and smile detection are pretty cool and work nicely. You can even prioritize smiles of adult, child or infant! The camera has also the capability to do some photo editing in the camera itself which is a nice add-on. The camera retails for $299, but when I bought it Best Buy had an online special for $269 only, so I went to their store and they matched the online price since I needed the camera and couldn’t wait for the shipping.

In conclusion, if you are looking for a compact camera I think the W170 is a great option! Thumbs-upThumbs-upThumbs-upThumbs-upThumbs-up
