The Human Footprint

The first human shuttle went to space on October 4th 1957 and half a century later, hearths orbit looks like a junk yard. The European Space Agency (ESA) released some amazing simulation pictures of what our planet looks like from space. It is estimated that "only" 800 satellites are currently operational out of the 6,000 that were launched and still circle our planet.

You can see here all the rest of the images.

Surely you meant: "the first man-made satellite" in 1957. The first space shuttle flight occurred in 1987 (it was the Columbia, I believe).
